Tips to Keep Your A/C Running Smoothly All Summer

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to get that A/C in shape so it can handle the hot days ahead. To do this, you need to focus on preventive maintenance and efficient operation so you can save energy.

Preventive Maintenance

There are several steps you can take to prevent any issues with your air conditioning down the road.

Change the Air Filters Regularly

You should be replacing your air filters frequently—some say as often as once a month. If you have pets or allergies, you should be especially aware of this maintenance tip and make sure you are changing your filters regularly. Filters prevent dirt and allergens from clogging your A/C system.

Clean the Outdoor Unit

Keep debris, grass clippings, and other obstacles blown by the wind away from the outdoor unit. By doing this, you ensure the unit has proper airflow so it can work efficiently.

Tune It Up Every Year

Before the peak of summer hits, hire a professional HVAC service to give your A/C unit a complete check-up. A professional tune-up will address any potential issues and ensure your system performs optimally.

Check the Refrigerant Levels

During the annual check-up, the technician will check your refrigerant levels. Low levels can lead to decreased cooling efficiency and possibly damage the system. You want this taken care of before temperatures reach the triple digits.

Inspect the Thermostat

Check your thermostat to make sure it’s working correctly. If you don’t have one already, consider replacing your outdated thermostat with a new smart model. They’re easy to program and include energy-saving settings.

Efficient Operation

Pull Down the Shades

No matter what type of window coverings you have, close them so your home gets a break from the sweltering sun.

Adjust the Thermostat

When you leave your home, raise the temperature a bit to save energy. Smart thermostats can be programmed to adjust at set times, so you don’t have to remember to change the temperature every time you leave for work.

Place Fans Around the House

Install ceiling fans to circulate air in bedrooms and living areas—they also create the illusion of coolness. Just a few fans can reduce the need for your A/C to overwork this summer.

Fix Leaks in the Ductwork

Leaks in the ductwork can significantly reduce cooling efficiency and increase energy consumption. Have a professional inspect your ductwork before it gets hot, so you’re not wasting energy or money through those leaks.

Other Tips

Keep the Vents Clear

Make sure all the vents in your home are unblocked. They shouldn’t be obstructed by furniture or other household items.

Don’t Run Appliances During Peak Hours

When it’s hot, avoid running the dishwasher or oven. Even the dryer can heat the house, so try to use it early in the morning or in the evening when the sun is lower.

Listen for Odd Noises

If you hear strange sounds like squealing, banging, or grinding coming from your A/C vents, it’s a clear sign you need a professional to inspect your system.
