Noises Your Furnace Shouldn't Make

Any Season HVAC • January 30, 2023

A functional and efficient furnace is a key requirement to keep your home warm and comfortable during winter. But too much noise from your furnace can be a sign of a problem that needs to get fixed immediately. Learn about the common strange noises your furnace shouldn't produce.

Chirping

An occasional chirping sound could be normal since switched-on furnaces produce them as they warm up. But a continuous chirping sound can be a sign of a misaligned blower motor pulley. Also, a furnace's blower wheel touched by the mounting plate can cause chirping noises.

Banging and Booming

Expansion and contraction of furnace ducts cause banging sounds, which is normal. However, delayed ignition because of burner problems, faulty ignitors, or a low pilot light flame can cause loud and frequent furnace bangs. Ignorance of loud furnace bangs and booms increases the risk of heat exchanger cracks, which could subject you to high repair expenses.
Also, cracked furnace heat exchangers can cause health problems because of carbon monoxide leakage.

Humming

Problems with your furnace's electrical components, like a transformer, blower motor, or inducer motor, can cause humming noises. Only a furnace technician can inspect and replace your furnace's aged or defective electrical components.

Clicking

Occasional clicking sounds are common when furnaces ignite. For that reason, an issue with a furnace's ignition system can cause continuous clicking sounds. Also, a faulty control panel, fan motor, or compressor can cause repeated clicking noises in furnaces.

Squealing

Furnaces either produce dry, grating squealing or high-pitched squealing. Dry squealing sounds can signify worn-out motor bearings or a broken furnace belt. Lubricate the worn-out motor bearings and have the broken belt replaced.
High-pitched squealing noises often show that air doesn't properly flow in your furnace. Blocked or closed heating vents and dirty air filters cause airflow problems in furnaces. To prevent this, ensure your furnace vents are free from any obstructions. Also, if you replace dirty or clogged air filters, this can also prevent airflow issues and high-pitched squealing noises.

Rattling

Loose furnace components like doors and access panels can cause rattling sounds. Cracked burners, heat exchangers, or belts also cause furnaces to make rattling sounds. If your furnace has visible loose parts, use a wrench to tighten them up. Other mentioned issues are complex, so call a technician for the necessary repairs or replacements.

Rumbling

Your furnace can make a slight roar once it finishes a cycle. But, a loud rumble once a furnace completes its cycle can signify a faulty pilot light or unclean burner. Immediate repair of a furnace that makes loud rumbling noises can prevent possible carbon monoxide leakage.

Thwapping

Any interference with a furnace's blower or blower blades can cause thwapping sounds. While the problem doesn't cause much distraction, it can result in quick motor or belt wear and tear. The faster the motor wears out, the more the furnace becomes inefficient.

Grinding

Worn-out components like motor bearings, especially in oil furnaces, result in grinding sounds. If your furnace makes a grinding sound, you should shut it down and call a technician for diagnosis and repair.

Knocking

Sometimes, air bubbles block the lines of oil furnaces, causing them to knock. If your furnace makes knocking sounds, have its lines drained to get rid of the air bubbles in them.

Scraping

A loose or broken blower wheel can cause your furnace to make scraping noises. Don't ignore scraping noises from your furnace because the underlying issues could cause it to wear out quickly.
An HVAC technician can quickly and safely fix any issue that causes your furnace to produce unusual sounds.
